Parent Support Groups in Bed Stuy
Elaine is so thrilled to be announcing the start of a new parent support group IN PERSON in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn!
After having my own baby, I really became passionate about the postpartum period and the importance of support networks. For me, being a mom was full of love and joy, but also feelings of isolation and loneliness. I found it challenging to meet other local parents and craved interactions with others who were going through the same physical, emotional, and mental ups and downs as me. After my daughter entered school, I really truly understood the importance of parent friends, and as a wise friend once told me, “they were the friends I didn’t know I needed.”
I’m so excited to bring this opportunity to create community and support by offering parent groups, which I’ll facilitate. During these meetings, parents will get to know each other, offer advice and support, and connect with each other.
What topics will we discuss?
What other information or resources will be included?
You’ll also gain access to all of Central Park Midwifery’s referrals and valuable information about various topics (favorite books, websites, and help and advice with things such as clogged ducts, pumping, weaning, and much more). We’ll start a group chat with group participants via WhatsApp too, which will allow for continued communication and connection in between sessions.
What’s the ideal time to join this group?
The group will be most catered to those in the fourth trimester (up to 12 weeks postpartum) and/or with babies less than six months old. If the group is successful, I’ll create opportunities for growth beyond that.
Why not just meet up with other parents on our own?
You most definitely can connect with other parents on your own! Or use this as a stepping stone to create relationships and community. However, it can be challenging and awkward sometimes to make this happen on your own, especially in the postpartum period. By joining this group, you’ll be joining a group of folks who are looking for support from their parent peers, but also being facilitated by an experienced professional midwife and mother. We will have set topics for discussion, and focus on diving deeper into support than what’s often found in casual meetups. We’ll also be meeting in a comfortable and private space, with access to a bathroom and a place to change your baby (IYKYK…haha!). For a cost similar to a meal at a restaurant, you’ll be gaining so much more than just a casual meetup. The goal is to help parents be more open with each other and build deeper connections, with professional guidance and support, as well as lots of extra resources.
Where will the group take place?
Our groups will be held in person in a cozy apartment space, once per week for one hour. There is a maximum of 5 participants. Babies are welcome! The space is a 3rd floor apartment with two flights of stairs that must be climbed. There will be some indoor stroller parking available for folded strollers. Exact address will be given after confirmation of sign up, but it is located near Putnam Avenue and Ralph Avenue.
How do I join?
Please contact me via the contact form to inquire about availability, ask questions, and to sign up for the group!
When does it start?
Groups meet once per week and run in five week sessionsCohorts are based on when folks have had their babies, usually no earlier than at least 4 weeks after delivery. The meetings will usually take place on Tuesdays or Thursdays, 11-12pm.
What is the cost?
The cost for the 5 week series is $150. Sliding scale is available to BIPOC families and single parent households.
I look forward to hearing from you!
